So you’ve probably seen the B Corp logo on our clothes and those of fellow environmentally devout companies, but what does it mean exactly to be a certified B Corporation business?
Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are a growing collective of companies that are dedicated to using the power of business to solve large-scale social and environmental problems.
To become certified, a company is rigorously evaluated by how they interact with its workers, customers, community, and environment. They must then pass a verification test to make sure their score meets B Corp standards, and once verified must retake this assessment every three years to maintain B Corp status. An annual certification fee is also mandatory for keeping status.
We were officially certified in 2018 and are honored to wear this badge of environmental and social stewardship, as Synergy is deeply aligned with B Corp’s mission to build a better business world. B Corp certification is a public declaration of the values and systems that are at the core of our entire business.
As stated on their website, “B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. Society’s most challenging problems cannot be solved by government and nonprofits alone.”
“The B Corp community works toward reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities, and the creation of more high quality jobs with dignity and purpose. By harnessing the power of business, B Corps use profits and growth as a means to a greater end: positive impact for their employees, communities, and the environment.”
In addition to our B Corp certification, we are also a Gold Green America Certified Business, a Monterey Bay Area Certified Green Business, and all of our organic cotton is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. We are proud of these accomplishments and aim to continue to be leading examples of the way business can and should be done- fairly and sustainably.
We also greatly value transparency, and on our website we have a new “Impact Calculator” where you can see the impact your purchase from us (vs. a conventional cotton product) has on the environment. The data used for this calculator encompasses everything from seed and fiber production, to packaging and transportation of product. This tool is a fun way to see how your small, conscious purchases with us add up to bigger changes. Our friends at Sustainable Jungle recently covered the practices behind our eco-friendly tee shirts. You can also head over to the “How its Made Matters” section of our website to learn more.
We believe that with every action and choice we individually make, we can truly be the change we wish to see in the world.
