Embracing the Dark, Welcoming the Light

Embracing the Dark, Welcoming the Light

December 16, 2020

In a year full of immense grief, fears, darkness and the deep work of confronting both our personal and collective shadows; winter solstice could not be more welcomed. The literal and metaphorical return of the light is a soothing balm to our weary souls.

December 21st marks the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, where many cultures celebrate the first day of winter or “mid winter.” On this day the sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky, which means it is the shortest day and longest night of the year. The sun appears to pause on solstice for three days and then proceeds to rise again, with our daylight slowly increasing again all the way until the summer solstice.

As we steadily gain more daylight, we gain more hope and optimism as well. We emerge from the darkness anew, reflective and inspired to begin again. The themes of rebirth, regeneration, joy, abundance, and gratitude are very much present in the various celebrations during this revered turning of the wheel.

Honoring and celebrating the seasonal shifts is a way to deeply re-attune ourselves with the natural world. As the earth changes, dies and rebirths so do we; our moods, identities, bodies and paths are also constantly in flux. Connecting with the rhythm of our environment helps us stay grounded, balanced and present to our lives and to each other. This connection to the earth’s natural changes was something our ancient ancestors noted and worked with all over the globe, in varying ways. It can be incredibly easy to lose ourselves in the hustle and bustle of the modern world, but these shifts give us a much needed reprieve if we let them. A chance to pause, realign, refocus, renew.

This year’s solstice is especially poignant, as it aligns with a powerful celestial happening, “The Grand Conjunction” as astrologers call it. Meaning, the conjunction (or close alignment) of the planets Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius. These two giants have not been this close to each other in the same sign in almost 400 years. This pairing is both auspicious astrologically, heralding a pivotal new beginning and chapter in our personal and collective lives. As well as astronomically, Jupiter and Saturn will be extremely bright and close to each other- visible to viewers everywhere where clear skies reign.

All of this to say, let there be light! The theme of solstices is always light, a pause to embrace the influx (winter) or decrease (summer) of daylight and to honor the sun’s life giving energy. But solstice’s are equally about the polarity and acceptance of the dark. Throughout the remaining long days of winter we learn how to embrace the shadows, reclaim rest, honor the fertility of the dark and dream craft our future to come.

Winter is full of magic and opportunities to strengthen our intuition if we give ourselves the proper time and space to tune in. And coming off the heels of eclipse season, this particular winter is especially ripe with opportunities to begin again. We don’t need to wait until January 1st for a reset, we are being given the chance right now.

Some journal prompts to get quiet with this solstice:

What is my relationship to the dark? To stillness and rest? How do I hold them within myself?

What am I most afraid of that sits within the darkness of myself? How can I gently shine a little light there?

What is my relationship to the light? To passion and warmth? How do I hold these within myself?

How do I stoke the fires of my own life? And the lives of those I care about?

Am I giving myself enough spaciousness in my life to feel the subtleties that want to be felt right now?

Am I avoiding anything in my life right now? How would it feel to sit with that for a moment?

Am I craving anything in my life right now? How would it feel to envision that viscerally for a moment?

What is the biggest lesson I’ve worked with this year?

What is the greatest gift I’ve received this year?

What does the future l dream of look like? What does the collective future I dream of look like?

Happy Solstice~ May you find some time to honor the balance within and without, and may all be illuminated with ease.

Grounding into Spring

Awareness of the earth’s natural rhythms harmonizes us with her cycles, it helps us align our personal cycles with nature’s, which can give us more grounding and ease in an often unstable world. As the renowned author Joseph Campbell said, “The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.” The equinoxes and solstices of the year give us the perfect opportunity to do just that.

It’s (finally) starting to cool down a smidge over here in California, and if you pause long enough during dawn and dusk, you can smell fall in the air. That crisp sensation marking the changing of the guards, the fallen leaves of orange and yellow becoming more present, and the ever constant cawing of crows claiming their rightful season. Despite intensifying wildfires and constant global turmoil, the refreshing depth of autumn is here like a much needed balm.
