Embodying Change

Embodying Change

June 20, 2020

Well here we are, almost half-way through the year at summer solstice and on the ingress of a new moon solar eclipse. We are deep in the belly of eclipse season, eclipses always herald endings, transformations and new beginnings of some kind, both personally and collectively. As within, so without. This particular eclipse portal is one of the most energetic of the year.

Coupled with solstice, the longest day of daylight of the year and the beginning of Cancer season astrologically, the theme right now is illumination of what restricts, liberation through responsibility, and compassionate boundaries. Themes of clearing, cleansing, and new found clarity abound, asking us to really tune in to the subtleties of our deep-seated patternings and habits. Some of us might feel powerfully activated, others completely exhausted, all emotions are valid. The key is to fully be with our range of emotions and give ourselves the balm of healing in whatever form necessary.

Maybe we take this weekend and this moment to rest deeply, recharging our nervous systems to make sure we are well equipped for the collective revolution at hand. Maybe we gather with close friends or family to rejoice in the power of summer, warmth, growth and snippets of unbearable beauty, because pleasure is needed too.

Maybe we use our energy to organize together to imagine new ways to fight for justice and liberation for the most oppressed. Whether we take to the streets, the beach or the bed to rest, this moment is for finely attuning to how we can better show up for what is being asked of us.

How can we balance personal freedom with responsibility, self-expression with structure, rest with activism, compassion with accountability, truth with wisdom, and love for all beings without bypassing reality. How can we all embody the primordial mother, that both nurtures and also fiercely defends and protects. This is Cancer energy, soft yet powerful and unyielding, just like water.

Honoring and celebrating the seasonal and cosmic shifts is a way to re-attune ourselves with the natural world that holds us. As the earth moves, changes, dies, and rebirths so do we; our moods, identities, bodies, and material worlds are also constantly in flux. It is perfectly okay to feel an ever shifting myriad of emotions daily. It is perfectly okay to not feel okay. We are in a monumental collective shift, we are all learning, unlearning, adapting, and evolving. We have reached a pivotal moment of raw transformation on a global scale. Deep change is both available and inevitable now.

Allow this time to permeate your entire being and clear out what is still stagnating, weighing heavy, feeling outdated and no longer relevant for the liberated world we are actively creating in both heart and action.

On this solstice weekend, may you allow yourself the time to connect with the rhythm of your environment in whatever way feels the most natural to you. May you find a way to stay grounded, balanced, refreshed and regenerative. May this renewed stability allow you to to move forward in a way that creates long lasting change and freedom for all beings.

As the great writer and future envisionist Octavia Butler said,

"All that you touch you Change.

All that you Change Changes you.

The only lasting truth is Change.

God Is Change."

Some practices to embody change:

- Spend time sitting by a natural body of water; a lake, river or ocean. Focus on how water moves, takes shape, changes, expands, retracts, supports life, alters life. How can you be more like water? Meditate for a bit with this, and journal your reflections.

- What is a deep seated habit of yours that keeps you from growing, expanding and/ or learning more than what you already know? How can you work on this as a daily practice for personal liberation? What is stopping you from beginning?

- Start a garden, small or large. Make your own compost from your food scraps. Notice how the garden is a regenerative place; how it takes the waste you discard and turns it into fertilizer, which then helps you create food, nourishment, something new. Gardens are a beautiful experiment in death and rebirth.

- Research was you can educate yourself on the core issues in front of us; on U.S. history, social and racial justice, and systemic oppression. Learn new things and talk about them with others. Find ways to organize resources in your community to affect radical, liberatory change on a bigger level.

- Reflect on who you were five years ago. Go through some old photos and journals, have conversations with friends who knew you then. Make note of the growth you’ve undoubtedly achieved, even in the smallest of ways. Give yourself appreciation for getting this far, for letting go of outdated ways, for embracing newness. Reflect on who you would like to be in five years from now. Make an action plan of small things you can do right now to embody that future self.

May we find all the ways available to both be the change and let ourselves be changed.

It’s officially Spring, and while that brings with it some much needed sunshine and blossoms, it also marks a year long pandemic anniversary. It’s wild to acknowledge how long we’ve all been in this; learning, changing, adapting, improvising in every way of being.

Awareness of the earth’s natural rhythms harmonizes us with her cycles, it helps us align our personal cycles with nature’s, which can give us more grounding and ease in an often unstable world. As the renowned author Joseph Campbell said, “The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.” The equinoxes and solstices of the year give us the perfect opportunity to do just that.
